Flaine is a good base for a mountain holiday that is not limited to skiing. From the resort you reach the five communes of the Grand Massif, you can match the programme to each person's ability, and you can enjoy the mountains in summer too. Here are some concrete pointers for planning a chalet rental in Flaine, starting from the Hameau.
Why choose Flaine for a family holiday?
Flaine sits at 1,600 metres, in the heart of the Grand Massif. The resort is linked to four other sectors: Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. The benefit is simple: everyone plans their day around their own ability and mood, without the whole group having to follow the same programme.
- Alpine skiing across a large and varied ski area
- Beginner areas in every resort
- Off-slope activities for children and adults
- Walking, mountain biking and nature outings in summer
- Mountain villages to explore down in the valley
- Direct access from Geneva and Cluses
The Grand Massif quotes 139 pistes, 62 lifts and 265 km of pistes across the five resorts, between 700 and 2,500 metres. It is one of the largest linked ski areas in France.

For a group of 4 to 10 people, how you organise the week matters as much as which resort you pick. Renting a chalet means you can share meals, build in quiet time and avoid imposing the same rhythm on everybody.
A family ski holiday: how to organise it
A family ski week works better when it is planned by ability, not by day. Beginners start in a dedicated area, rather than trying to cross the whole ski area on the first morning. Intermediates alternate between Flaine and the village resorts. The more experienced have wider sectors and routes where the landscape changes from one valley to the next.
Three principles that save time:
- Book the ski lessons before the accommodation. The children's slots in the school holidays go first.
- Plan a half-day off mid-week. The third or fourth day is when the tiredness catches up, especially with under-10s.
- Hire the equipment in advance. Children's sizes and helmets are the first things to run out in a peak week.
For the youngest, the ESF ski school in Flaine takes children from the age of 3 at the Club Piou Piou, which runs on all three levels of the resort — Flaine Forum, Flaine Forêt and Flaine 1800. Group lessons on the pistes take over from flocon (snowflake) level.
Flaine or Les Carroz for beginners?
The answer depends mostly on the atmosphere you are after. Flaine is a high-altitude resort with direct access to the ski area: it suits families who want to ski regularly and keep the daily trips to the slopes short. Les Carroz offers a village feel and access to the Villages ski area, for those who prefer to combine skiing, shops and village life.
We go through the comparison in our guide Flaine or Les Carroz: which resort for your family.
The five resorts of the Grand Massif
| Resort | What it brings to your week |
|---|---|
| Flaine | High-altitude resort, skiing, family activities and long views |
| Les Carroz | Village atmosphere, skiing and family events |
| Morillon | Village linked to the ski area, mountain activities and open nature |
| Samoëns | Historic village, walking, mountain biking and sport |
| Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval | Quieter sector, nature and mountain heritage |

Which lift pass should you choose?
This is the point to settle before you leave, not at the ticket window on the first morning. The Grand Massif pass covers skiing in all five resorts. The Villages pass covers Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt, but does not include Flaine.
The distinction matters if you are renting a chalet in Flaine and want to ski several days in the village resorts: in that case, the Grand Massif pass is the one you need. For the 2026-2027 season, expect between 324 € and 368 € for a 6-day adult pass depending on the period, excluding the compulsory ski card (+2 €).
A Flaine pass, a Villages pass and a Grand Massif pass do not give access to the same sectors. Check your plans before you buy, not after.— The most common first-day mistake
What to do in Flaine when you are not skiing
A week in the mountains is not a week of skiing from dawn to dusk. The days without a lift pass count just as much in the children's memories.
- Sledging and play areas — no skiing needed, ideal for the youngest
- Snowshoe walks — on the resort's waymarked routes
- Ice rink and indoor activities — useful on days of poor visibility
- The Flaine art trail — the resort is an open-air museum
- A trip down to the valley — Samoëns and its historic village, under 40 minutes away
The art trail is worth stopping for. Flaine was designed by Éric and Sylvie Boissonnas as a museum-resort: you come across Picasso's La Tête de Femme (Woman's Head), Dubuffet's Le Boqueteau (The Copse) and Vasarely's Les Trois Hexagones (The Three Hexagons), all freely accessible in public space. The Centre d'Art de Flaine, open since 1970, runs free guided tours with prior booking. It is an hour-and-a-half outing that makes a change from the lifts, and it works surprisingly well with children.
And in summer?
The area looks completely different. The walking trails open up towards the high-altitude lakes, the waymarked mountain-bike routes drop down to the five resorts, and the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval — one of the largest rock cirques in the Alps — is a little under an hour's drive away.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car for a holiday in Flaine?
Not day to day. The resort shuttles are free and serve the Les Gérats sector, where the Hameau sits. Two free inclined lifts link Flaine Forêt to Flaine Forum, 24 hours a day. A car is still useful if you plan trips down into the valley, towards Samoëns or Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval.
From what age can a child ski in Flaine?
The ESF ski school in Flaine takes children from the age of 3 at the Club Piou Piou, which runs on all three levels of the resort: Flaine Forum, Flaine Forêt and Flaine 1800. Group lessons on the pistes then start at flocon (snowflake) level.
Which lift pass should you choose if you are staying in Flaine?
The Flaine pass is enough to ski the resort's own sector. As soon as you want to cross over to Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns or Sixt, you need the Grand Massif pass. Watch out: the Villages pass does not include Flaine.
Can you visit Flaine in summer?
Yes. The resort stays open through the summer season, with access to the walking trails, the mountain-bike routes and the high-altitude lakes of the Grand Massif. The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval is about an hour's drive away.
How long should you stay?
A week is still the most comfortable format for making the journey and the lift passes worthwhile. Outside the school holidays, short stays of 3 or 4 nights are a cheaper way to discover the resort.
In closing
The best family holiday is not the one where you ski the most, it is the one where everyone finds their own rhythm. Accommodation big enough to gather in the evening without treading on each other changes everything over a week.
