Flaine without a car: train, shuttle and low-carbon trip

Skiing without a car is no longer a fad: it is often cheaper, always less tiring, and emits incomparably less. Flaine is doable — as long as you know the right station, the right bus and the connection times. Here is the full chain, with what is confirmed and what is not yet for winter 2026-2027.

Cluses station: the gateway to Flaine

Flaine's tourist office gives two reference points: Cluses 30 km away and Geneva 70 km away. Cluses is the station you want. It has two decisive advantages when you travel loaded: it is a three-minute walk from the town centre, and above all the bus station adjoins the SNCF station. You get off the train, cross over, and get on the bus.

A warning about the distances you will read elsewhere: some sites state 15 km between Cluses and Flaine. That figure is for Les Carroz, not Flaine. Stick to the 30 km given by the official source, and to roughly 30 to 40 minutes of road from the motorway exit.

Getting to Cluses by train

From Paris. Direct TGV inOui services call at Cluses: the station is an intermediate stop on the Paris-Gare-de-Lyon route towards Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet, via Bellegarde and Annemasse. One point of honesty: the frequency and the exact seasonality of these direct trains for winter 2026-2027 are not yet confirmed by SNCF, and some comparison sites only show journeys with a change. Check on SNCF Connect when sales open rather than relying on a timetable found online.

From Geneva. This is the most reliable and the simplest route. Line L3 of the Léman Express links Coppet and Geneva-Cornavin to Saint-Gervais via Annemasse, La Roche-sur-Foron and Cluses. Geneva airport has its own station connected to Cornavin, so you can chain a flight or an international train with the Léman Express without ever touching a steering wheel.

From Annecy and Lyon. TER Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes trains link Annecy to Saint-Gervais via La Roche-sur-Foron, stopping at Cluses. From Lyon, expect one change.

A piece of common sense advice from the shuttle operators: allow at least 1 h 30 of margin between the train arriving and the bus leaving. A twenty-minute delay should not cost you your connection up to the resort.

From Cluses to Flaine: the « Les Carroz Flaine Express » bus

This is the link nobody knows about, and it works well. The line is called Les Carroz Flaine Express — it has no number, only that name. It is run by the Arv'i Mobilité network, the mobility service of the Cluses district.

The route: Cluses Gare → Balme → Arâches-la-Frasse → Les Carroz → Flaine, with a terminus listed at Flaine Forêt.

What is published:

• fares from 2 €, varying with passenger type and period;
• luggage included: 1 piece of hand luggage, 1 piece of hold luggage and 1 pair of skis or a snowboard;
• online booking through the Altibus portal, at the Maison du Tourisme et de la Mobilité in Cluses, in the tourist offices, or on board for single tickets;
• in the 2025-2026 season, the service ran every day from 13 December to 19 April, roughly from 6 h 30 to 19 h.

What is not published, and should not be invented: the exact journey time Cluses → Flaine and the number of return trips per day. Arv'i states timetables « adapted to the season and to demand ». The 2026-2027 dates and fares have not been released yet.

From Geneva airport: the shuttles that serve the Hameau

Geneva is 70 km from Flaine according to the tourist office, but the actual road distance quoted by the transport companies is closer to 90 km. On journey time, operators announce 1 h 20 to 2 h 15: work with a range of 1 h 30 to 2 h 15 in winter conditions, not the optimistic time sometimes displayed.

Ben's Bus is the only operator to have published its 2026-2027 calendar already: shared shuttles on Saturdays, from 19 December 2026 to 10 April 2027. Announced fares are around 63.50 £ return and 36.50 £ one way, with a group fare and a reduction for 4-12 year olds. The detail that matters here: its Flaine stops include Le Hameau, lower stop and upper stop. That is a drop-off a few steps from the chalet, with no extra transfer.

EBA Eurobus, sold through Altibus, runs from Geneva airport to Les Carroz then Flaine Forum, on Saturdays and Sundays only during the season. In 2025-2026, fares started at 35 € one way and 70 € return. The 2026-2027 calendar has not been published yet.

Other companies serve Flaine on a shared or private basis, including Alpine Fleet, which advertises shared transfers from around thirty euros per person and also drops off at the Hameau, and Mountain Drop-offs, operating 24 hours a day but with no published Flaine fare.

For a flight, allow 3 hours of margin between landing and the shuttle leaving, baggage and customs included.

From the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany: mind the trap

This is where you have to be precise, because the marketing around « snow trains » misleads a lot of people.

The Travelski Night Express is indeed confirmed for winter 2026-2027, with a line from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels, fifteen rotations from mid-December to the end of March. But its terminus is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, via Moûtiers and Aime-la-Plagne: that is the Tarentaise, in Savoie. This train does not serve Haute-Savoie and does not get you to Flaine. The same goes for Eurostar Snow from London.

The Alpen Express, long the Dutch way of reaching the Alps, did not run during winter 2025-2026 for lack of available rolling stock. Its status for 2026-2027 is not known at this stage.

The two realistic routes, with no direct night train:

• Amsterdam or Brussels → Paris by Eurostar, then TGV to Cluses;
• Amsterdam → Basel or Zurich → Geneva → Cluses with the Léman Express. Worth noting, the Amsterdam-Zurich night service switches to new-generation Nightjet stock in December 2026.

Both chains make sense, but no timetable can be verified at this stage for next winter: build your journey on the booking engines when sales open.

Once in Flaine: getting around without a car

This is what makes the whole thing credible. Flaine presents itself as a pedestrian environment across its three levels — Front de Neige at 1 500 m, Forum at 1 600 m, Forêt at 1 700 m. The exact official wording is semi-pedestrian: cars are still allowed for dropping off luggage, but you do not need one day to day.

The in-resort shuttles are free and run all day, in winter as in summer, between Flaine Forêt, the Les Gérats area — that is, the Hameau — and the col de Pierre Carrée. The « Le Hameau » stop is above the roundabout; be aware that the uphill and downhill stops are not opposite each other but on either side of the roundabout.

To reach Flaine Forum from Flaine Forêt, two free inclined lifts, open 24 hours a day, make the link. The exact shuttle frequency is not published: the official sources say « all day », with no stated interval.

One point to know so you do not get the season wrong: the free shuttles between Les Carroz and Flaine run in summer only. In winter, the link between the two resorts is made by bus or on the pistes.

Finally, around ten taxi and passenger transport companies are listed by the Flaine tourist office. None publishes a Cluses → Flaine fare: ask for a quote, and book ahead, which the office explicitly recommends.

What it really changes in carbon terms

The figures below come from the carbon comparison tool of SNCF Voyageurs, which draws on ADEME's Base Empreinte and includes use, manufacturing and maintenance. They are expressed in grams of CO2 equivalent per passenger and per kilometre.

Applied to the same journey, this gives a simple order of magnitude to remember: the TGV emits about 25 times less than a car carrying 2.2 people, and nearly 35 times less than the plane. On a one-way Paris-Cluses trip, the gap between train and car runs to tens of kilos of CO2 per person.

Two reading precautions. First, these factors assume a car carrying 2.2 people on average: a family of five in a single vehicle does clearly better than the figure in the table. Second, ADEME and SNCF publish slightly different values because their scopes are not identical — do not mix the two sources in the same calculation.

The real gain, beyond carbon, lies elsewhere: no chains to fit in the snow, no parking to pay for all week, and a driver who arrives rested.
